Have you heard about Perhentian Islands? Don’t worry, because most people haven’t heard. But surely you will love the post about this place. The Pehrentian Islands are within about 8 hours by bus (very good roads) from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Arriving in Kuala Besut, we need to take a boat that will get you to the Perhentian Islands and arrive in half an hour. There are two islands, there is a larger and a smaller one. The largest is called the Perhentian Besar and the smallest is called the Perhentian Kecil. They are literal translations for large and small in Malay Bahasa, the local language. The largest is quieter and more appropriate for families and couples. The smallest is for backpackers and it has a party and fun atmosphere.
We chose the New CocoHut hotel, which is very simple, with small cabins, but great prices (around $60 for couples) in lodging with breakfast. Regarding the food, a good plate of pasta or soup (typical dishes in Malaysia) costs less than $5.
Hotels offer some tours including snorkeling to see coral and turtles too. Our tour included turtles and it was possible to see them. They are huge and peaceful and swim in the calm and warm waters of the islands. On this tour, there was also the possibility of seeing sharks, these were very large ones, but harmless. We saw some, about 3 or 4 at the dive site.
On the second day, we decided to snorkel on their own and it was amazing! With 2 or 3 steps into the sea, you already can see corals of all kinds and colors and many fish, like moray, eels, sea urchins and if you’re lucky even some small coral sharks and of course, turtles and stingrays . The visibility is very high and if you take a piece of bread, the fish will eat in your hand, literally.
In the islands, there are small souvenir shops, massage places, dive courses and srnorkel, nothing too strenuous. Pehrentian is the kind of place that, in the late afternoon, you can sit and watch the sea calmly and walk by the small walkways of the island and watch the beautiful turquoise sea! Surely, this unknown place must be part of your next plans.
